You will need a federal compliant card such as a passport, military ID, or REAL ID driver license or ID card to board a domestic flight or access some federal facilities beginning October 1, 2020. The DMV started offering REAL ID driver licenses and ID cards on January 22, 2018.
A field office visit is required to apply for a REAL ID driver license and ID card.
In order to process your renewal, you must:
- Use the latest version of DMV’s recommended web browsers: Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari.
- Create an online account.
- Be the person named on the renewal notice.
- Not have a change of address.
You may not renew online if you wish to update or change your:
- Name
- Address
- Gender
You may not apply online for a:
- REAL ID for the first time
- Reduced Fee DL/ID
- No Fee DL/ID
- Commercial Driver License
- Senior ID

Vehicle Registration Renewal or File for Planned Non-Operation (PNO)
Before you begin, you must:
- Have your license plate number and the last 5 digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for a vehicle or the Hull Identification Number (HIN) for a vessel/boat.
- Have your smog certification filed with DMV, if needed.
- Have a renewal notice that shows your current address OR confirmed through the Change of Address system that your address has been updated.*
Renewing your registration only takes four simple steps
- Enter vehicle or vessel/boat information.
- Confirm record information and select payment option.
- Read and accept the eCheck payment terms, if applicable.
- Receive confirmation of your transaction.

have recently submitted or intend to submit within the next 7-10 days an
online change of address, we recommend that you mail in your renewal
notice and change your address on the back of the form.
